INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 4th issue of “The ‘D’ View,” and it’s a shame that you may not yet know all of the women that play on the defense. Last week’s “D” view introduced and welcomed the newcomers to the “Dark Side”, and this week we would like to introduce the veterans, the women who are warped enough to do this for more than one year.

Editorial Note: Thanks so much for the input from those who have contributed thus far. While not all of your comments were used in the last issue, many of them may very well be used in the future. Please remember, this is your newsletter, and it can only survive with your valued input. Please submit comments, thoughts and or suggestions to Joyce Brown. If E-mail, for whatever reason, is not accessible, please phone in your input (team members, staff and coaches have her cell phone #).

Due to publication deadlines, whenever possible, please submit input for the following areas no later than 6 P.M. on the day following a game: Game Views, Inspirations, Teammate Thanks To, Big Hits, Big Plays, MDP, Special Events and Coaches Comments. Please state what the suggested team member/members or staff did, in your opinion, to be recognized. Editorial information will be solicited throughout the week.

GAME VIEWS

Sacramento vs. Santa Rosa - "Can You Say Scorched?"

Saturday’s game appeared to feel much better for the Sirens as a whole than did last week’s bizarre series of bay area events. This week, Sac’s defenders were clearly more relaxed, perhaps because they were playing in front of their home crowd. The Sirens Defense again played like family that they are rapidly becoming; they viciously defended every inch of their turf—even though many defenders were playing relatively new positions. The front line looked good plugging the holes; hardly anything could get through. Any coach or military commander would have been proud of their performance. While virtually everyone played well, which is supported by the lopsided score, Heather “Dot” Chattin, #90 performed especially well and played up to her nickname—playing connect the dots with the Scorchers. Every time the Scorchers tried to break through the line, there was Dot and company—dotting the “I” in “STOP IT.”

It is clearly an understatement to say that the entire Sirens’ Defense was again the game’s dominant force. Through a combination of interceptions, fumble recoveries (forced and unforced) and fourth down stops, they handed the ball to the explosive offense 13 times. It is virtually impossible for any football team, at any level, to win when they are the victim of that many takeaways and or turnovers. One interception came via the intelligent play of Tina “Taco” Rogers, and the second by the quick, late-game reactions of Nancy Stoner. In addition to the INTs, the defense recovered 5 fumbles; they came at the hands of: Carolee Parker, Kimberly Bradshaw, Traci Miller, Gina McCann, and Jeny Gardner. Rookie Carolee’s fumble recovery was very nice; the ball seemed to bounce magically into her hands, and you all know she was thinking “Touchdown!” –maybe next time. Equally interesting was Traci Miller’s reaction after her fumble recovery; she looked like her eyes were getting ready to pop out of her glasses. “Way to go rookies.”

Many alternates who went in before and after the half played their butts off. Defenders like: Angela Ainely, Carolee Parker, Dion Longoria, Anne Canfield, Tameka Hutcherson, Traci Miller,Jeny Gardner,Nancy Stoner, AJ Miyata, and Denise Grandison made the best of their time on the field; they proved that when needed, they are completely capable of stepping it up in any kind of situation and step it up they did.

This “D” View issue is necessarily shortened and could have been said in three words: “Total Defensive Domination.” The next game, a trip to Oakland, will definitely be more challenging.

THE FAMILY ROOM
INSPIRATIONS
According to Nikki Kopacz, “The score was the inspiration. Lill Jarrell was also an inspiration in the beginning when the defense got together. She really put everyone in the mood to play football. Lill hyped up the whole crowd.”

Anne Canfield said, her inspirations were Lill Jarrell, Tina Rogers, Kimberly Bradshaw. Also Joyce Brown “because she is one of the few people older than herself”.

Angela Ainley was inspired by Tina Rogers, “She is a performer and she put on a show”.

Joyce Brown, felt that “Even though the alternates might not get to play that much, their expressions and the fun they had out there was inspiring. They showed that they have heart.”

Acccording to Kimberly Bradshaw, “Heather ‘Dot’ Chattin played well in this game. Dot had some awesome hits and really stepped up to the plate. She made it to the first step of the porch. If Dot keeps playing like she did, she will be on the porch with this ol’ dog. Haha!”..

Lorraine Grandison said she was inspired because, “Kellie Kirkpatrick played well even though she was hurt.”

According to Denise Grandison, “Carolee Parker’s and Dion Longoria’s enthusiasm was inspirational.

A.J. Miyata said, “Lill inspired me in the beginning; she got us and the crowd fired up. In the second half, Carolee Parker and Dion Longoria got a good look at the field; they had fun . Dion was pumped up.”

Coach Butler said “Kimberly Bradshaw coming face to face with #44 Shea Cannon was inspirational”.

TEAMMATE THANKS TO
A.J. to the Defense, Thanks for kicking a--! As one.

Lorraine Grandison to Gina McCann, “You brought the defense together.”

Anne Canfield to Kimberly Bradshaw for giving her the thumbs up after she made a tackle.

Angela Ainley to Nancy Stoner for keeping her head in the game. “Nancy felt that it was her fault for letting the Scorchers score.”

Joyce Brown to the families, fans and friends for coming out to support and cheer for their team. “Without you guys, the stands would be empty and quiet like in some other cities. You are the best fans in the league.”

Nikki Kopacz would also like to thank the defense for shutting down Santa Rosa, and taking away all hopes of winning the game. “It’s always fun when the team you’re playing changes their goal from winning the game to just getting on the board”

Coach Butler would like to thank the second group for going in with a goose egg. Butler said, “If we would of gone in at the half with a score Santa Rosa score on the board, things might have been different. The second group stopped Santa Rosa going into the half. He would also like to thank coaches: Deboe, Jordan, and Arrowsmith. “Last year I had to coach the defense by himself, but with these three coaches, they raised things to a whole new level.”

BIG HITS
According to most of the players, one of the “biggest” was Tina Rogers’ “EARTHQUAKE tackle.” According to Coach Butler, “Stepanie Cors crashing through Santa Rosa’s line—almost breaking the quarterback’s back and Gina McCann stuffing Shea Cannon were big. He added, “The biggest of the big hits was Tina Rogers’—technique, form and power!”

BIG PLAYS
Angela Ainely and others noticed that special teams came through with some big plays and tackles.

Joyce Brown said “The second string for not giving up, having fun and continuing with the hits, fumble recoveries, and tackles. Also, Tina Rogers’ interception was big. She was slipping and sliding with so much power that she blew her shoe off”.?

A.J. said “Tina Rogers interception and Nancy Stoner’s first interception were big.

Nikki Kopacz said, “Two plays in a row, Stephanie Cors almost made two catches. I know what it’s like girl…”

MDP (Most Defensive Player)
Many defenders said that Tina stood out individually and that the entire secondary as a group played as well as anyone could have hoped for. “Total Defensive Domination”

COACHES' COMMENTS
According to Coach Butler, “Kimberly Bradshaw was tenacious. I had never seen her play at that level.” Butler also said, “I am very proud of Carolee Parker and Dion Longoria; “They expressed joy in them being out, and they promoted family.
