"BLOW OUT" SCORCHERS IN GAME 2
by The Sacramento
Sirens
October 1, 2002
The
Sacramento Sirens continue their drive to the Championship
with an impressive 62-0 win over the Santa Rosa Scorchers
in the teams' first match-up of the season. The Sirens "Sack
Pack" Defense has not allowed a single point in regular
season play.
The
Sirens' Defense was on its game again racking up impressive
tackling totals across the board. The "Sack Pack"
took down the Scorcher's QB #9 Leslie Bagley 9 times and
intercepted the Santa Rosa passing game three times. Veteran
Defensive Lineman #71 Gina McCann topped that total with
three sacks followed by two sacks for Veteran Linebacker
#6 Tina "Taco" Rogers. The Defense was instrumental
in keeping the offense on the field.
The Sirens' Offense blasted out from their very first touch
of the ball giving the Sirens a chance to really test their
2002 offensive strategy in this match up with the Scorchers.
In their last game against the SF StingRayz, the Sirens
offense spent only 14 minutes on the field, running a total
of 31 plays and scoring 6 times, hardly enough time to get
a good look. Not so this game where the Sirens offense took
control of the ball and kept it for twelve drives and nine
TD's.
On the first punt return of the game, the Sirens' #22 Julie
"Wicked" Wicher exhibited both her awesome speed
and her amazing moves as she returned the ball 75 yards
for a Sacramento TD early in the first. #21, Hilary McLaughlin
kicked the point after.
Following
Santa Rosa's second drive, the Sirens took possession of
the ball and ran 3 plays before Wicher broke away with a
28-yd. run for a second score. McLaughlin obliged with another
PAT. After a 1-2-3 and out drive for the Scorchers of only
1 minute and 7 seconds, Wicher took another punt return
and blasted 73 yards for her third score in the 1st Quarter.
McLaughlin's 3rd PAT attempt was successful. The Sirens
also attempted a Field Goal in the end of the 1st but Santa
Rosa stepped up to block the kick and regain possession
of the ball. The score after one quarter of play was Sirens
21- Scorchers 0.
Mixing things up a little in the 2nd, #11 Veteran QB Leilani
Limary broke open the Sirens new passing game and threw
for two touchdowns. The first was 27-yard toss to rookie
Tight End #83 Courtney Brazil. McLaughlin missed her kick
on this PAT attempt. The second passing TD throw was 8-yards
to Rookie Wide Receiver #88 Laurie Webb. Making up for lost
points, the Sirens ran the ball in for a 2-pt conversion
bumping the score at the half to Sirens 35 - Scorchers 0.
Coming back in the second half, QB Limary and the Sirens
offense brought out the tried and true running game making
four drives for the end zone and scoring each time. After
running a beautiful 7-play series that moved the ball 60
yards up the field, Limary scored on a 9-yard QB option
followed by another McLaughlin extra point. The next drive
was concluded when #36 veteran fullback Dana "D-train"
McIntyre punched it over the line. Score at the end of the
3rd was Sirens 48 - Scorchers 0.
Taking possession at the beginning of the 4th, the Sirens
executed a quick 5-play drive that resulted in McLaughlin
running 17-yards for another TD. McLaughlin followed that
up with another successful kick for a PAT. And finally,
handing off to Game #1's MVP #23 Michelle Kahler, the Sirens
scored the last TD of the game on a 15 yard run. McLaughlin
rounded out the score with a last kick. Final score: Sirens
62 - Scorchers 0
Julie "Wicked" Wicher was named MVP for the game.
